Cleaning street signs brightens Logan's day

Logan cleans street signs in Grimsby to help the local community

An eight-year-old boy says he cleans street signs to "help drivers see where they're going".

Logan, from Grimsby, spends his weekends cleaning the signs after being inspired when he saw a picture of his parent's landlord's son doing the same.

His father, David, says he feels "proud" to see his son "doing his bit for the community".

Logan adds: "I love it because all the mucky water just drips and I say 'that sign looks beautiful'."

Armed with a microfibre cloth, a yellow brush and orange bucket, Logan says he likes the smell of cleaning.

"If someone needs to see where they're going and it's (street sign) all mucky they can't see," he says.

"Every time I go back there (to the sign) I say 'I did that'."

Logan is autistic and David says cleaning helps to calm his son down when he is "having a bad day".

His passion for cleaning began when he was 18 months old.

"We thought it was a bit of a phase. He started playing with toy vacuum cleaners but it just continued and snowballed," David says.

"He's often taking them apart and rebuilding them."

Logan now has a collection of about 30 vacuum cleaners and, in the future, hopes to manage a carpet and valet cleaning business.

When David posted his son's cleaning efforts on a local Facebook group he says he could not believe the response.

"I'm so proud of what he's done and I'm really happy to see so many people saying nice things," he says.

"It's made him want to keep doing it, too. He's really enjoying himself.

"One of his teachers commented saying how good a job he was doing, he was especially thrilled about that."

Councillor Paul Batson, portfolio holder for housing, infrastructure and transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, says Logan's cleaning efforts are a great help to the council's own team.

"I want to say a personal thank you to him for looking after his local area. We can all take something away from his actions - always take pride in where you live."

The council clean road and street signs throughout the year as part of an ongoing schedule.

Priority is given to mandatory and warning signs due to health and safety risks.
