Organisers of one of Jersey's most popular summer events say they are hoping a fireworks finale will be able go ahead after recent hot and dry weather.

Gorey Fete is due to take place this weekend around Gorey Pier and Grouville Common, with food, entertainment, funfair rides, competitions and fireworks. Some rain has been forecast before then.

The fete comes after the Battle of Flowers cancelled its fireworks display amid concerns over dry conditions.

Organisers said it would be for the relevant authorities to decide if the display could happen as planned but, if approved, they were due to start at 22:30 BST on Friday.

The Battle of Flowers display was cancelled after failing to secure the "necessary licence for the display" following "extensive discussions with the relevant authorities".

Fete organiser Lester Richardson confirmed they were in the same position in discussions with authorities.

He said: "We'd love them to go ahead, obviously, because it's a great finale for the event", but he added organisers would accept whatever decision was made.

There is rain forecast for in the week and Lester said he hoped "there will be quite a bit of it", though he conceded it may not be enough to make a difference.

He said the display was planned to be based "on a barge, it will be out at sea... the fireworks do fall into the water... so, you never know. We'd like to think they'll go ahead".
