Arson arrest after 'suspicious' fire at four properties

A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation following a fire in Winchester involving four commercial properties.

More than 50 firefighters in 10 fire engines were sent to the blaze in The Square at about 06:00 BST.

Hampshire fire service said crews at the "significant" fire were working to bring it under control and stop it spreading further.

People have been urged to avoid the area with a cordon in place blocking pedestrian access from High Street and vehicle access from Market Street. Hampshire police said no further injuries had been reported.
