Metro trains suspended at height of rush hour

The service was suspended between Pelaw and Brockley Whins on Monday morning

Metro train services were halted in south Tyneside throughout most of the morning rush hour due to a points failure.

No trains could travel between Pelaw in Gateshead and Brockley Whins from 07:40 to 10:05 BST on Monday according to Nexus, which runs the Tyne and Wear network.

A spokesperson apologised for the disruption and said a replacement bus service had been provided and tickets were being accepted on local bus services between Gateshead and Sunderland.

They said track engineers had fixed the issue and the cause, which was being investigated, was not weather related.

The fault occurred at the junction at Pelaw where the Metro line splits between the line to South Shields and the one to Sunderland, Nexus said.
