A 13-year-old boy who stopped his friend falling from a bridge in Herefordshire has been given an award by police for his "remarkable actions".

Joey held on to his friend to prevent them falling from the bridge in Bromyard last month until West Mercia Police officers arrived and dealt with the situation, the force said.

The teenager "showed bravery and courage beyond his years, putting himself in possible harm's way to help another" and has been given a Chief Superintendent Commendation by the force.

Ch Supt Edd Williams said: "Faced with an incredibly distressing situation, he showed exceptional courage, maturity and determination to keep his friend safe until emergency services arrived."

Joey, described by police as "a true credit to his local community" was presented with the award by PC Hamilton and PC Jones, the force said on Monday.

"Joey's actions that afternoon was nothing short of remarkable," Williams said.

"His quick thinking undoubtedly helped prevent a tragedy, and he should be immensely proud of what he did."
