In Pictures: Wing-walking, waterspouts and the Proms

A daredevil 97-year-old has been spotted high in the sky in Gloucestershire, strapped to a plane in a Guinness World Record-breaking attempt.

As the summer holidays go by in a warm haze, a bit of magic has been created across Bristol's city centre with several handmade fairy doors hidden in plain sight.

And we have experienced some incredible weather phenomenons across the region, including a rare waterspout and cloud iridescence.

Here are some of the West's highlights in pictures.

Bristol

Big performances: Hundreds of ticket holders have been enjoying music at the Bristol Beacon and St George's as the BBC Proms returned to the city once again. The proms continue into Sunday.

Hot wheels: The annual cycling fundraiser for Bristol Bears Foundation took place this week and raised more than £45,000 to support the rugby charity's access and inclusion work.

Riders crossed the suspension bridge and took on Cheddar Gorge.

Trading places: The rugby team were busy, as fifty Bristol Bears players also traded rugby boots for wheelbarrows and waders as they volunteered at Bristol Zoo Project, tackling everything from clearing blanket weed from the gorilla island moat to installing new posts and ropes in the lemur walkthrough.

Blink and you'll miss it: Bristol BID (Business Improvement District) celebrated National Play Day this week by unveiling more than 30 handcrafted fairy doors hidden across Broadmead.

Somerset

Not a drop in sight: Green spaces across Somerset have felt the effects of consecutive heatwaves this summer.

All across the West, grasslands have turned a yellow colour while waiting for signs of rain to come.

Natural phenomenon: A farmer in Watchet captured a waterspout which formed over the Bristol Channel.

Chris Cottrell, of Doniford Farm Park, was feeding his animals on Saturday morning when he spotted the phenomenon on the horizon.

The narrow, spinning column of air is a tornado which forms over water during showery weather conditions.

Gloucestershire

Never too old: Ninety-seven-year-old Betty Bromage strapped herself to the wing of an Aero-Super-Batics biplane in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the oldest female wing-walker, with her sixth wing walk, at RFC Rendcomb Airfield near Cirencester. Step back in time: Gloucester Cathedral has secured a £250,000 grant from the Wolfson Foundation towards the conservation of the internationally significant Great Cloister (which you might recognise from some of the Harry Potter films).

The project is helping to safeguard one of the most important examples of medieval architecture in the world.

A magical sight: Take a look at this cloud iridescence captured over Cam in Gloucestershire.

The phenomena happens when sunlight bends and scatters around microscopic, uniform droplets or ice crystals.

Lasting love: Congratulations to Peter and Betty Trotman who celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this week, having married on 4 August 1956.

Family and friends arranged for a vintage car journey from their home in Apperley, travelling through Bishops Cleeve, past the church they were married in, then through Tewkesbury town centre before returning to Gupshill Manor, where close family and friends gathered for a celebratory lunch.

What a rescue mission: This peregrine falcon was spotted struggling in a pond. Gloucester Cathedral's team swooped in to rescue the bird and rushed it to Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre.

The falcon has now been released back into the wild after receiving the care and attention it needed.

Wiltshire

Making ends meet: A third-generation farmer who is opening a maze to subsidise the cost of producing food says his grandfather "wouldn't be able to get his head around it".

Jeremy Stokes, who farms near Devizes in Wiltshire, said he had been forced to pull away from mainstream agriculture due to rising costs.

Better together: Locals in Chippenham gathered for a dementia-friendly picnic this week hosted by Right at Home Central Wiltshire as part of Dementia Adventure's national initiative.

Guests enjoyed bingo, storytelling, sensory experiences and a "create your own bouquet" flower bar.

Shaded sheep: The sheep of Avebury have also been feeling the effects of the recurrent heatwaves.

These ones were seeing seeking shade against the ancient stones as the hot temperatures continue across the region.

Toe-tapping concert: The High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Dr Alexander Goodwin, together with Debbie Vincent, president of Rotary Club of Swindon, have presented a cheque for £9,842.88 to Swindon domestic abuse charity Society Without Abuse.

The amount was raised in a concert which included young choristers from the JTP Trust Youth Choir and singing group Ten in A Bar.
