Groups invited to apply for climate change fund

Community groups in Surrey are being invited to apply for a share of £125,000 for projects that will help tackle the effects of climate change.

Surrey County Council (SCC) says that town and parish councils, community, voluntary and faith groups are able to apply for individual grants capped at £16,000.

The new Community Resilience Grant has been designed to help residents who are confronted with increasing risks from extreme heat, flooding, and wildfires, the council says.

Marisa Heath, cabinet member for environment & planning said, "We're acutely aware that many of the UK's community spaces were not built to withstand some of the conditions we are now experiencing."

SCC said it will work in partnership with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service SFRS to support local groups and help deliver the projects.

SFRS area commander David Nolan said: "We're proud to be working with Surrey County Council to support local groups making a difference across Surrey."

There are two stages for the grants, with deadlines set for 16 and 30 September.
