Plans to redevelop former greyhound racing stadium
PA MediaPlans have been submitted to a council to build 17 commercial units on the site of a former greyhound racing stadium.
Peterborough's Greyhound Stadium in Fengate ceased to operate during the Covid pandemic and was later demolished after being open for 89 years.
Peterborough Sports Stadium Ltd has applied to Peterborough City Council to build the commercial units, which included storage and retail spaces and 310 car parking spaces.
According to the design statement, the proposal will provide direct and indirect job opportunities, including 260 on-site operational jobs during construction.
The site is currently used informally by businesses largely operating within the automotive industry, including for vehicle servicing and storage.
Employment hub
A previous planning application for the site was submitted by Fengate Land Holdings Limited, which bought the site from the Perkins family, who had owned it since 1945.
That proposal sought permission to demolish the stadium to make way for nine hybrid commercial units to operate as an employment hub, which was approved in 2024.
Peterborough Sports Stadium Ltd has since revised the scheme and plans to reconfigure the site's layout and access points.
In its glory days, the stadium, which opened in 1931 for Greyhound racing, attracted thousands of visitors.
It was extended in the late 1980s to include a new grandstand and restaurant and again in 2003 with new seating areas, before it was closed in May 2020.
Peterborough City Council is yet to make a decision on the plans.
