A man has been charged with murder after a man died following an assault in Peterborough.

Ashley McMillan, 31, had been accused of assaulting John McGarry, 63, in Broadway, near Tesco Express, at about 02:30 BST on 30 August.

Cambridgeshire Police said Mr McGarry, from the city, suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital, where he died on 12 December.

Mr McMillan, of Oundle Road, Peterborough, had been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent. Police said the charge was changed to murder on Tuesday.

He is due to appear at Peterborough Magistrates' Court.

In a statement issued via the police, Mr McGarry's family said: "We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Addenbrooke's Hospital for the care he received, and to his many friends for their love, kindness and support."
