Motorists faced rush hour disruption after traffic lights outside Peterborough City Hospital were damaged when a car crashed into them.

Cambridgeshire Police were called at around 02:00 BST on Monday following reports that a vehicle had struck the central reservation near the hospital in Bretton Gate. The vehicle was recovered by 03:15 BST.

Drivers and hospital staff reported heavy congestion and long delays on the A47 Soke Parkway on Tuesday morning.

Peterborough City Council had installed temporary signal lights, but a spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, there were issues with the sequencing of the temporary lights which we are working to resolve."

The local authority apologised for the inconvenience and said "engineers are currently on site to repair the damaged lights and we expect to have them back in working order shortly. "

The Highways Agency has advised motorists to avoid the area unless they need to access the hospital and to expect delays.
