Thousands of counterfeit cigarettes and tobacco products have been seized during raids at six businesses in East Yorkshire.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council trading standards officers and Humberside Police carried out the checks during a day of action.

During the raids, officers found 17,420 cigarettes and 20.3kg (45lb) of hand-rolled tobacco, with a total retail value of £9,227.

Councillor Lyn Healing, cabinet member for communities and public protection, said: "We are committed to taking firm action against illegal trading activity, and we encourage residents to report any such activity to the relevant authorities."

The council said the illegal tobacco products had been hidden in the buildings, including concealed under counters, behind panelling and in outbuildings.

A spokesperson said the products had not been made for the UK market, and were contrary to the Tobacco Related Products Regulations 2016, the Standardised Packaging of Tobacco Products Regulations 2015, and the Trademarks Act 1994.

The authority urged residents to report the suspected sale of illicit cigarettes, tobacco and vapes to Crimestoppers or Citizens Advice.
