Work to build a temporary bridge over River Witham in Lincolnshire has started.

It is part of the North Hykeham Relief Road project which will see a five-mile (8km) dual carriageway built near Waddington, to complete a loop around Lincoln and connect the A15 and A46.

The 100-tonne bridge will provide a safe and efficient route for more than 100,000 construction vehicles, Lincolnshire County Council said.

Councillor David East, executive member for highways, said: "The haul road will help reduce congestion, noise and disruption for residents throughout the works, while also improving safety and journey reliability for other road users."

The bridge will take four months to build, the council said.

The authority said the relief road would help ease congestion around North Hykeham and Lincoln, as well as create housing and employment opportunities.

New roundabouts will also be built at South Hykeham Road, Brant Road and Grantham Road.

The £200m project is being funded by the Department for Transport and Lincolnshire County Council.
