Man arrested after boy, 4, hurt in hit-and-run

A man has been arrested after a four-year-old boy and a woman were struck and injured by a motorcycle in a suspected hit-and-run.

Northumbria Police was called at about 15:30 BST on Saturday to reports of a collision on Sea Road, next to Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, in South Shields.

The boy remains in hospital with serious injuries and the woman, in her 30s, sustained minor injuries.

The 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and remains in police custody.

The force said it had also recovered a motorcycle and helmet believed to be linked to the crash.
