A four-year-old boy and a woman have been struck and injured by a motorcycle in a suspected hit-and-run.

Northumbria Police were called at about 15:30 BST on Saturday to reports of a collision on Sea Road, next to Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, in South Shields.

The boy remains in hospital with serious injuries and the woman, in her 30s, sustained minor injuries.

The motorcycle, which was not displaying a registration plate, then left the scene. The force is appealing for the rider of the motorcycle to come forward and described him as a white male of thick build. At the time, he was wearing a sky blue, short-sleeved t-shirt with dark shorts, black ankle socks and red trainers, officers said.

The two other motorcyclists referenced in an earlier appeal were located and are not linked to the incident, police said.

A section of the road was briefly closed between Ocean Road and Beach Road but later reopened.
