Driver in death crash 'distracted' by music app
BBCA driver who killed a 68-year-old man while scrolling through a music app on his phone has been sentenced to two years and eight months in a young offenders' institution.
Ryan Richardson, 20, from Brough, previously admitted causing death by dangerous driving after the crash on the M62 on 26 February 2025.
He was sentenced at Hull Crown Court earlier and also banned from driving for six years.
Police said Richardson was driving a Toyota Yaris at about 67mph (107km/h) when he crashed into the back of a Toyota Aygo.
During his police interview, he admitted being distracted by his mobile phone and failing to spot traffic ahead.
Humberside Police said the motorway had been reduced to two lanes because of roadworks, with a 50mph (80km/h) speed limit.
Heavy traffic was almost at a standstill between the junctions for Howden and North Cave.
The driver of the Aygo died at the scene, the force said.
Sgt Rob Mazingham said the incident was entirely preventable: "By using his mobile phone whilst driving, Richardson has caused the death of a man whose family will have to live with their heartbreaking loss for the rest of their lives."
