Emergency services were called to the busy road in the early hours of Tuesday morning

A woman has died after she fell from a bridge on to an A-road and was hit by a number of vehicles, police have said.

A large section of the A45 near Northampton was expected to remain closed for several hours after the incident, which happened on the eastbound carriageway at 01:50 BST.

Northamptonshire Police said: "The A45 between the Wilby Way roundabout and the Bedford Road junction is expected to be closed on both sides for the majority of the day."

Drivers have been advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

A temporary airspace restriction banning drones from flying would remain in place within 500m (1,640ft) of the A45's Billing Bridge until 16:00 on Wednesday, police added.

The force appealed for anyone with information or witnesses to get in touch.

National Highways said diversions were in place and the closure was making nearby roads extra busy.
