New bridge work starts in £13m flood defence plan

Work has started on a £13m village flood prevention scheme.

The Environment Agency (EA) said the project would protect about 100 homes in the Teesside hamlet of Skinningrove, near Saltburn, and include the removal of outdated flood gates.

Stone Row Bridge and its parapets will be demolished and replaced with a new crossing over Skinningrove Beck between New Company Row and Zetland Row.

The current floodgates are manually controlled and when closed they cut off vehicle access for residents. The EA said the deck of the new bridge would sit above the height of the existing flood walls, eliminating the need for gates.

During the work the play park at Mill Lane will be shut to the public and the recreation ground used for storage.

The EA has pledged to revamp the facility once the bridge project is complete.

The new crossing is expected to be ready by late 2027, with the demolition of the old one scheduled to happen by early 2028 at the latest.
