Under-threat market moves to new location
Worcester City CouncilA city's weekly market is set to move location for the first time in 30 years after it was given a last-minute reprieve.
The outdoor market in Angel Place, Worcester was placed under review by the city council in May, leading to doubts about its future.
But the authority has since announced it will move to the Cornmarket in September under new operator, Bluebell Events, which runs markets in Droitwich and Evesham.
Council leader Lynn Denham said: "It's fantastic news that Worcester's weekly market will continue in a new location."
Space for stalls at the old site had reduced significantly due to the ongoing £16m revamp of the Scala Theatre.
Former operator Cotswold Markets Limited cited declining footfall and rising costs but said it would continue to operate a craft-themed market in the High Street twice a month.
'Thrive for years'
The market will take place weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays, down a day on the Angel Place arrangement.
Denham added: "Markets are an important part of the city's offer, helping to attract shoppers and visitors.
"The market in Angel Place has been a valued part of the city centre for more than 30 years.
"We're pleased to have found a new operator and I hope the move will help the market continue to thrive for many years to come."

Chloe Ford, from Bluebell Events, said the company was excited to make the market a "thriving success" and invited inquiries from traders interested in having a stall.
She added: "We are committed to giving Worcester a high-quality weekly market that supports the city's enterprise and creates a true destination for visitors."
The new market will be held on Thursdays and Saturdays between 09:00 and 16:00 BST.
