A £6m regeneration project designed to revamp a Derbyshire town centre has been completed.

A new public square, pavilion building and play area for Staveley have been created with funding from the government's Towns Deal.

Other work includes new CCTV, paving, lighting, seating, greenery and a sculpture created by artist Coralie Turpin, which features work from school children.

Ivan Fomin, chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: "I'm delighted to see these works completed as this town centre continues to be a place where the community can spend time together and support local businesses."

The new pavilion will house Staveley Library on the ground floor and a business on the first floor.

The library is expected to open later this year, and the council said it is in discussions with several businesses with the aim of letting the space out.

Pupils from Staveley Junior School and Netherthorpe School were also invited to the town centre to see their work on the new sculpture.

Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres at Chesterfield Borough Council, added: "We've created a flexible space that will help encourage visitors on a day-to-day basis but also provides space for the town centre to host events and activities for the community to enjoy.

"This is a town centre that the community can be proud of, and I hope lots of people will visit to see the transformation for themselves."
