Plans to develop a public space in Bilston for the community have been approved.

The link between Pinfold Street and High Street would include event space, school-age play areas and social spaces, City of Wolverhampton Council said.

The authority said it would seek to appoint a contractor, with a view to work starting this year.

Traders are temporarily occupying the spot during market hours while the outdoor market is redeveloped.

They will go back to the new-look venue later this month, with the first day of trading set for 2 July.

Bilston High Street Link connects WV Active Bilston-Bert Williams Leisure Centre and the wider Urban Village development to Bilston town centre.

The council said the scheme formed part of the Bilston Health & Regeneration Programme, supported by funding secured from the government.

The authority's leader Stephen Simkins said: "Now planning approval is in place our focus can turn to delivering the Bilston High Street Link improvements as part of our wider transformation for the town.

"We not only want to enhance this public space to create a better environment but also make it a thriving space for activities, particularly for the young people of Bilston."
