A tip has been forced to close after skips and and waste material were stolen in what police suspect were a series of break-ins.

Lower Cwmtwrch Household Recycling Centre in Powys remains closed while police carry out enquiries and a clean-up operation takes place.

Dyfed Powys Police said the skips were taken between 18:00 and 22:00 on Monday and between 15:00 and 21:30 on Tuesday, and are appealing for witnesses.

Powys councillor Richard Church described the incident as "highly unusual and serious" and said the site would remain closed until it could be made safe for the public.

The council said all residents with bookings have been contacted directly and plans are in place to open as soon as possible.

In the meantime, residents are being advised to use the household recycling centre in Brecon.

Richard Church, from Powys council, said it was working with police to ensure the site is made safe and "fully restored before it reopens".

"It is important that we take the time to do this properly so that we can minimise the risk of anything like this happening again," he said.

"In the meantime, I would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding. Bryson Recycling, which operates the site on behalf of the council, has also expressed its apologies."

Police have appealed for witnesses.
