Splash pad fast-tracked after paddling pool closure
Exeter City CouncilWork on a new splash pad is being brought forward after a popular paddling pool closed at the start of summer.
Families in Heavitree, Exeter were frustrated when the much-loved pools shut last Friday. The site had reopened earlier in June, but the city council said ageing equipment could no longer run reliably.
Plans for a replacement have now been fast-tracked, with construction set to begin sooner than expected and hopes the upgraded splash pad could open by the end of summer.
Design images show a bright, colourful space with fountains, tipping buckets and accessible features, with seating areas and a safety fence for families with young children, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
Councillor Duncan Wood said: "We know this news will be upsetting for families and residents who were looking forward to using the pools this summer, and we are sorry."
He said the council had explored all options to keep the facility open, but added: "The ageing equipment and systems have reached the end of their working life and can no longer operate reliably."
He explained the upgraded pools had already been designed and confirmed work would now begin earlier than planned because a contractor was ready.
Wood said: "This creates an opportunity to deliver a better, more sustainable facility for the future. In the meantime, the splash pad in St Thomas remains open for families to enjoy over the summer months."
