'Huge haul' of crabs and oysters seized by police

A "huge haul" of crabs and oysters has been seized by police officers dealing with a road closure.

The Hampshire officers were directing traffic after a crash closed Langstone Bridge, the main road to Hayling Island, on Sunday afternoon.

In a post on social media, Havant Police said several people were spotted collecting a large quantity of shellfish in three shopping bags, before attempting to leave the area.

The force said the seafood was seized "due to local regulations designed to protect the area's marine environment and shellfish stocks".

The crabs and oysters were returned to the sea by the team's police community support officers.

Police said those involved in collecting the creatures would be interviewed.

Emergency services were called to Langstone Bridge, Havant Road, at 15:02 BST on 26 July following a three-vehicle crash.

A police spokesperson said four people were injured in the incident and the bridge reopened later that afternoon.

Officers thanked people for their "patience and understanding" after the road closure "significant disruption getting on and off the island".
