School shows late World Cup win to wide awake kids
BBCA school has streamed a replay of the Mexico v England World Cup last-16 match for its pupils so they did not risk missing their morning alarms by staying up to watch it live.
Linthorpe Primary School students and staff donned football kits to watch the match in the assembly hall, with the result kept a secret so they could experience the tension and celebration in real time.
Monday's original 01:00 BST kick-off had also been delayed for an hour, which headteacher Grace Mitchell said was "far too late" for most children.
She said: "Tournaments like this are a brilliant chance to get our school community together and celebrate how diverse we are and all the countries that make up our school."
Pupils Scarlett and Henry said they were "really excited" to watch the match.
Scarlett said she had not been able to watch any of England's performances in the World Cup because the matches were so late at night.
Henry, on the other hand, said he had "watched all the games so far".
He said: "Even the teachers have come in with banners and all that, the hall is full of England stuff - it's very Englishy."
Scarlett, whose favourite player is team captain and striker Harry Kane, said her message for the squad was: "Try your best and, even if you don't win, do the best you can."
Henry, whose favourite is midfielder Declan Rice, added: "Even if you lose, you've come so, so far."
