Fatal crash road could see speed limit lowered
Maddy Jennings/BBCA busy road where an elderly couple died after being struck by a car could have its speed limit slashed.
Sheila Welsh, 81, and her husband Campbell, 82, were returning home from a Christmas carol service when they were involved in a collision on the A148 at High Kelling, near Sheringham in Norfolk, on 22 December 2024.
Their deaths have led to a campaign for road safety improvements along the stretch of road.
Work has already taken place to enlarge pavements and add road markings but now there are plans to cut the current national speed limit from 60mph to 50mph.
Izzy WelshDetails of the speed limit change have emerged after Andrew Brown, a Liberal Democrat councillor for the area, called for more details about how the road would be made safer at a cabinet meeting this week.
He said the local community had been waiting to hear what improvements would be made.
Norfolk County Council said it has been working to address safety concerns and that the speed limit drop could be in force by next year, following a public consultation.
It would affect a stretch of road between High Kelling and the A1082 Holway Road.
Steffan Aquarone, North Norfolk's Liberal Democrat MP, said he believed Norfolk County Council should have acted sooner.
He said: "Residents and parish councils have been raising serious concerns about this road for years and it should never have taken further tragedy to force the pace of change.
"The 50mph limit is real progress. I'll keep pushing for further improvements, including a roundabout at the Holway Road junction."
