Confusion as council's TikTok account taken down

A town council's newly launched TikTok account has been removed from the platform for "no reason", a meeting of the authority has heard.

Wellington Town Council had agreed in June to trial an account on the popular social media video site.

But in an update on Tuesday, the authority's Events and Communication Committee heard that its bid to engage with the younger population had hit a problem as the account had been taken down.

TikTok, which lets users create, share, and watch short videos, has been approached for comment.

Council officials said they were given "no reason" for the action and had since lodged an appeal with the company, owned by ByteDance.

Councillor Paul Davis said he hoped the step was overturned.

Meanwhile, committee chairwoman Emma Holding said she wanted to understand why the account was banned and to avoid the same thing happening again in the future.

Councillors also suggested that Mayor Reg Snell should "write a letter" to the multinational social media giant to ask it to reconsider.
