Humber Bridge forms backdrop to soapbox race

Amateur racers will take to the track for the Humber Bridge Soapbox Derby

The Humber Bridge will form the backdrop for an annual race featuring homemade karts.

The Humber Bridge Soapbox Derby will be held at the Humber Bridge car park in Hessle, Hull, on Saturday 20 June from 10:00 to 15:00 BST.

With 18 teams taking part this year from local groups, the event is run by veterans charity Hull 4 Heroes. It is free for spectators and any money raised goes to the charity.

Poppy Claybourn, events and fundraising lead at the organisation, said they were hoping to have a few extra ramps and obstacles this year to add to the "fun, unique day out for all the family".

The event will also include food stalls, live music and local business stands.

Parking will be available at Humber Bridge car park and at Aura and Ergo on Bridgehead Business Park.

The soapbox event is organised by the charity in partnership with Hessle Town Council.

The event was first held in 2012 and returned in 2023 after a hiatus during the Covid pandemic.

Hull 4 Heroes are also entering their own soapbox in the design of a tank, which was revamped by BAE Systems in memory of team member Martin Chadburn.

Chadburn, described by Hull 4 Heroes as an "amazing person and much-loved friend and colleague", was a former army veteran and first started as a volunteer for the charity before going on to become a health and wellbeing officer.

Chadburn died in hospital following an alleged assault in Queen Victoria Square, Hull, on 19 April.

Three women and two men have appeared at Hull Crown Court charged with his murder.

No pleas were entered during the hearing and the defendants were remanded in custody ahead of another court appearance on 7 August.
