Deputy launches proposal to reduce fuel duty

A re-elected member of the States has proposed reducing fuel duty for three months to help islanders with the cost of living.

Deputy Lucy Stephenson has called for a reduction in petrol and diesel duty of 10p a litre from 1 October to 31 December, which she said would save the average family £5 each time they filled up.

The proposal says: "Cost-of-living pressures was the number one issue highlighted by islanders at this year's election.

"It is no longer just those on the lowest incomes struggling to make ends meet, but spiralling costs are impacting Islanders at all ages, stages of life and those earning a seemingly 'good' wage."

It continues: "We no longer have a temporary cost-of-living crisis but a sustained, long-term economic and human challenge."

The current duty sits at 64p per litre for both regular unleaded petrol and diesel.

The proposition is set to be considered by the minister for treasury and resources, who is due to be chosen on Friday 26 June.
