Third nature reserve wildfire within days

Two wildfires have broken out at separate Surrey nature reserves within hours.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service posted on social media that it was called to a fire at Whitmoor Common, near Guildford, at about 14:25 BST on Monday - days after fire crews were called to a separate blaze at the same nature reserve.

It then said crew were dealing with another wildfire at Brentmoor Heath near West End in Lightwater around 02:30 on Tuesday.

Four fire engines and multiple specialist vehicles were sent to the the fire, which covered four hectares.

Three fire engines, a water carrier and specialist wildfire vehicles were sent to the Whitmoor Common scene, where the blaze covered an area of about 50m by 60m.

The 166-hectare Site of Special Scientific Interest, was also affected by a wildfire last week.

Ten fire appliances were sent to that incident, which prompted warnings about the risk of wildfires during hot and dry weather.

Firefighters remain at the scene of the latest blaze.

People living nearby have been advised to keep windows and doors closed, while members of the public are also being urged to avoid the area.
