Driver jailed after pedestrian killed in crash

A man has been jailed after admitting killing a pedestrian who was fatally struck by the car he was driving in Bradford.

Darrell Dalton, 68, died after he was hit by a Honda Jazz being driven by Robert Nagoda on Little Horton Lane on 27 September.

Nagoda, 29, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and other charges at Leeds Crown Court in October, with the court told that he had been driving at up to 70mph (112 km/h) in a 30mph (48 km/h) zone before the collision.

At the same court on Tuesday, Judge Penelope Belcher sentenced Nagoda to 10 years and eight months in prison.

Nagoda, of no fixed abode, also admitted taking a vehicle without consent, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and failing to report a collision.

In a victim impact statement read out in court, Mr Dalton's daughter, Rebecca, said she missed speaking to her father every night.

"Not only do I live this pain now, I'll always have to live it because every time my son comes to me and tells me he misses his grandad I have to feel not only my loss but my son's loss too," she said.

"This should never have happened. No licence and driving, it should never have happened."

Following the sentencing, Det Sgt Steve Suggitt, from West Yorkshire Police, said: "This tragic incident shows the serious consequences of dangerous driving.

"Nagoda showed no regards for the rules of the road and even after he hit him, he drove away like nothing had happened."
