Families urged not to miss out on free school meals

Families are being urged to check their eligibility for free school meals following national changes coming into force.

From September, the previous earnings threshold for Universal Credit claimants is being removed, so all households receiving the support can apply regardless of income.

Westmorland and Furness Council has issued a reminder that this is not awarded automatically and has urged all affected families to register.

A survey earlier this month from Child Poverty Action Group found than half of parents whose children will be newly eligible did not know they would qualify.

Councillor Janet Battye, Westmorland and Furness Council cabinet member for children's services, said: "The expansion of eligibility means that many more families, including those who are working and receiving Universal Credit, may now qualify.

"Registering for Free School Meals not only helps families with the cost of school meals but can also unlock additional support and funding for schools.

"I encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible to check and apply."
