Consultation open as homes target nearly doubles

A local authority is drawing up a new planning strategy after being asked to accommodate nearly double the amount of new homes built each year.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Local Plan until 2040 was adopted last year, with a target for 1,100 new homes to be built annually. Under new government targets, this number has increased to 1,998 a year.

Council cabinet member Nick Coultish said: "The Local Plan plays a key role in shaping developments in our region, and we highly encourage residents to share their views throughout the process."

The online consultation is open until Monday 31 August.

The Local Plan covers the council's long-term strategy on issues including housing, jobs and infrastructure.

In the consultation document, the authority said it was one of 39 councils the government had asked to "progress a new plan as soon as possible".
