Firefighters have been tackling a fire in a section of forest at Sherwood Pines.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) said it was called to the site near Edwinstowe at 15:43 BST on Monday, with crews from multiple stations attending.

About 200m (656ft) by 50m (164ft) of forest - about the size of one and a half football pitches - was "well alight", the service said, and crews used equipment from its dedicated wildfire units to extinguish the fire.

An inspection just before 08:15 on Tuesday found "a couple of small pockets of fire", which crews are working to extinguish.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been revealed, but NFRS has appealed for people to help reduce the risk of fires by taking extra care with matches, cigarettes, glass bottles, and barbecues.

'Protect our forests'

In a statement, Ashfield Fire Station said: "This is extremely challenging work for our firefighters, especially in the current high temperatures.

"If you're enjoying the countryside, please help reduce the risk of fires by taking extra care with matches, cigarettes, glass bottles, barbecues, and any other items that could ignite dry vegetation.

"Thank you for helping to keep our communities and countryside safe."

Before the fire, Sherwood Pines urged visitors "take care in the hot weather, stay safe and help protect our forests".
