Jersey Zoo names baby capybara after public vote

Jersey Zoo has named one of its latest arrivals after letting the public decide.

Waffle was named after a potato treat - in keeping with her half-siblings Hashbrown and Dauphinoise.

The zoo announced the new arrivals in June, with keepers naming Waffle's siblings before putting her naming to a public vote.

Sharing the news on Facebook, Jersey Zoo said: "Thank you to everyone who voted. We are pleased to announce that Hashbrown and Dauphinoise's half-sister has finally got a name."

Other options shortlisted for Waffle included Tots, Hassleback, Gnocchi and Chip.

Jersey Zoo announced in June that their capybaras Tayto and Tango were "proud parents" after Tayto gave birth.

It comes a year after Tango forced the zoo to close temporarily after escaping from an enclosure.

He was later spotted elsewhere in the zoo grounds.

Capybara come from South America and are semi-aquatic rodents, likened to large guinea-pigs.
