A new surf school and café is set to be built at a popular tourist spot in North Yorkshire after planning permission was granted.

The existing surf school in Cayton Bay, near Filey, will be demolished to make way for a 21m-long (69ft) facility, which will be run by Scarborough-based surf retailer Secret Spot.

The two-floored building off Filey Road will include a cafe, kitchen, wetsuit and equipment hire and toilets.

The recent confirmation from North Yorkshire Council comes three years after planning permission was initially submitted.

Cayton Parish Council's planning officers described the designs as "sustainable and environmentally responsible".

The parish council added that the new surf school would promote tourism in the area and benefit the local economy.

More than three dozen members of the public wrote letters in support of the application, with no objections made.

Council planners said that vehicle traffic to and from the well-established surfing and tourism destination was expected to remain relatively low.

Planners added: "The replacement facility is of comparable scale and there is no evidence to indicate that the development would give rise to an unacceptable impact on highway safety."
