Target apologises for 'offensive' children Halloween costume after backlash

American retail giant Target has withdrawn a Halloween costume from sale after critics on social media said it resembled a racist caricature.

Describing the costume as "offensive", the store said in a statement that it was "hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners", without providing further details.

Images circulating online show a costume sold as the "Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume", and customers and others on social media say it evokes blackface and minstrel shows.

"As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry," Target said. "The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment."

"Removing the costume is an important first step, and the company is looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change to ensure this won't happen again," Target said.

The BBC asked Target about the costume in question, but the retailer declined to comment further.

Target has recently faced supply shortages and backlash over its decision to end its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) targets.

The company was also criticised over its handling of products in its Pride Collection in 2023.

The store is known for its affordable clothing and a wide range of groceries, household goods, electronics and toys.
