New 'no stopping' rules on busy city ring road
GoogleNew rules are to be introduced to tackle drivers stopping dangerously on Leicester's busy inner ring road.
Leicester City Council said it planned to place "red route" restrictions on the Burleys Way, St Matthews Way and St George's Way stretch of the A594.
The authority said the aim was to keep traffic flowing along the key route.
The new rules are set to come into force early in July and drivers will receive £70 fixed penalties if they breach them.
The work will begin on Monday to remove existing double yellow lines and replace them with red ones.
It will be done overnight to minimise disruption and is expected to take up to five nights to complete.
Leicester City CouncilSome temporary lane restrictions will be required and nearby residents have been warned there could be noise disturbance, the council said.
Letters have been delivered to nearby homes and businesses to give notice of the forthcoming work, which may be noisy.
Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for transport and environment, said: "This extension to two existing red routes is being introduced to tackle the problem of cars and lorries stopping illegally along this busy road.
"It will help cut congestion, keep traffic moving more efficiently and improve journey times for all road users on this important route in and out of the city."
Officials said there were no current plans to install fixed enforcement cameras on the red route, but the new rules would be enforced by the city council's CCTV camera car.
