Summer reading challenge returns to Surrey
Getty ImagesSurrey's Summer Reading Challenge 2026 has launched, offering free, family-friendly events across the county's libraries.
Primary school-aged children can sign up at their local library and take part either by reading up to six books or completing six goals of their choice to collect rewards, said the council.
"Reading regularly can make a real difference to a child's confidence, wellbeing and future opportunities," said Surrey County councillor Mark Nuti.
"Our 52 libraries are welcoming spaces at the heart of our communities, for all ages to read, work, study, learn something new or simply socialise with others.
"I'd encourage families to visit their local library and make the most of everything on offer this summer," he added.
Surrey County Council said that all reading counts - "from fiction and non-fiction to audiobooks and eBooks" - counts towards the challenge.
This helps make it "inclusive and accessible to every child", it added.
More than 10,400 Surrey children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge in 2025, with libraries across the county welcoming thousands of families over the summer holidays, according to the local authority.
'Free and low cost events'
This year's theme - Read to the Beat - focuses on the connection between stories and music, according to Surrey County Council.
It encourages children to explore how reading and rhythm can spark creativity and imagination.
Events this year include live performances by musicians from Surrey Arts at Staines and Woking libraries, alongside lively "Musical Story Hunt" storytelling sessions with John Kirk at Weybridge and Camberley libraries.
Surrey Libraries will also host other free and low-cost events and activities throughout the summer, including music-themed storytimes, craft sessions, creative workshops and family activities.
