The school said the decision to postpone its prom had been "incredibly difficult" and appealed for help to make the rescheduled event "magical"

A school which called off its Year 11 prom because of the heatwave has appealed for help from the community to create a "magical evening" at the rescheduled event.

Myton School in Warwick left hundreds of students disappointed when it called off Thursday's event the day before out of concern for pupils' health.

"Due to the extreme heat... we had to make the incredibly difficult decision to reschedule our Year 11 prom this week to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students," the school wrote on Facebook.

Head teacher Liz Curtis has now made a plea for decorations, donations of suits, dresses, hair and make-up appointments and vehicle hire, after pupils had to cancel bookings.

The red weather warning for extreme heat on Thursday, which saw the area sweltering in temperatures of up to 34C (93F), also led to the decision to shut the school at 12:30 BST on Thursday.

"We fully appreciate that this is extremely late notice but safety and wellbeing must remain our absolute priority, and it is for this reason that we feel postponement is the only responsible decision," the school said in a Facebook update.

The school asked any businesses who could help to get in touch so they could share details with parents

Some parents took to social media to complain they had lost money on cancelled appointments, and that children could not make the rebooked event, on 1 July.

The school acknowledged the disappointment of its "amazing" Year 11s, adding: "they have been looking forward to this milestone for so long".

"We are now working hard to make the rescheduled prom on Wednesday 1 July even more special - and this is where our wonderful community comes in," its message said.

"Whether you are a parent, local business, or know someone who might be able to help - we would love to hear from you."

"Every little bit of support will make a huge difference and help turn disappointment into something truly memorable for our students."
