Free health checks offered at community event

People in Hull are being offered free health checks and advice at a community event.

The Peel Project, which supports people belonging to ethnic minorities, is hosting its fourth annual fair at Peel Park between 12:00 and 15:30 BST on Wednesday.

The event, established in 2023 in conjunction with Hull City Council's public health team, aims to tackle health inequalities by bringing essential services into the community.

Visitors will be able to access a range of services, including women's health information, cancer awareness advice, mental health support and Indian head massages.

There will also be advice on affordable computers and gym membership offers, with giveaways including sanitary and oral hygiene products, as well as family entertainment.

Last year's health fair attracted more than 450 people, and featured about 40 organisations.

Organisers said they hoped the availability of free health checks would encourage residents who may not regularly engage with healthcare services to take positive steps towards improving their health and wellbeing.

Jamal Choudhury, managing director of The Peel Project, said: "Many health conditions can be prevented or managed more effectively when people access support early.

"By offering free health checks in a relaxed and welcoming community setting, we hope to remove barriers and encourage residents to engage with services that could make a real difference to their lives."

Choudhury said the event would also provide an opportunity for frontline services and community organisations to engage directly with residents to better understand the challenges facing local communities.
