Part of the M1 in Leicestershire has been closed following a serious crash involving two cars.

Emergency services were called to the scene, just after junction 20 on the northbound carriageway, at about 08:00 BST on Sunday.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said one person was rescued from a car before being taken to hospital. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.

National Highways said the carriageway would remain closed between junctions 20 and 21 "for several hours while collision investigations take place".

The highways authority added traffic initially caught in the closure had been released.

Fire crews left the scene at 09:16, a spokesperson said.
