Investigation into police dog complaint

An investigation has been launched into a complaint about an alleged incident involving a police dog.

Guernsey Police said the complaint, which followed reports on social media, had been lodged with its professional standards department.

In a statement to the BBC, Guernsey police added a criminal investigation was ongoing and a suspect had been released on police bail.

According to the College of Policing, police dogs should only be used against suspects "when necessary, proportionate and justified".

The college, which issues guidance on best practice for officers, said police dogs were commonly used for tracking suspects and supporting wellbeing.

Guernsey Police said it could not comment further while an investigation was taking place.
