Post office searching for new high street premises

A town post office is searching for a new premises as its current building is closing in September.

The Redcar post office is based in the back of TG Jones, known formerly as WH Smith, and will be one of 150 stores to close around the UK.

Locals have started a petition to find alternative premises for a post office and it has gathered 500 signatures.

A Post Office spokesperson said "regrettably" the Redcar Post Office was due to close on 3 September but it was looking to "open a replacement branch as soon as possible".

Redcar and Cleveland Council leader Alec Brown said the post office was "much needed", but that there had already been a couple of expressions of interest in relocating it elsewhere.

Local businessman Rafael Petros Kaldani said he would be interested in moving it to his store nearby, the Go Local Extra in Station Road, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The Post Office spokesperson confirmed the expressions of interest and said it was "important our products and services are to the local community".

The nearest remaining post offices are in Redcar Lane, Redcar, just under a mile away (1.6km), or in Ennis Square, Dormanstown, about 1.8 miles (2.8km) away.
