Two women and a child were injured when a gas canister exploded during recent high temperatures.

They suffered minor burns and were taken to hospital after the incident, which happened at a property on Main Road in Hollington, Staffordshire, at about 15:20 BST on Thursday.

It involved a small butane gas canister, which was sitting on a table in direct sunlight, a Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

The small explosion was possibly heat-related, they added. The fire service has since issued a warning about using gas canisters during the heatwave.

"Compressed gas canisters can be dangerous if damaged, heated or used incorrectly," the spokesperson said.

"Cans should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated location, away from direct sunlight, radiators or open fires."
