A man who "got greedy" when he paid for his wedding and holidays with money stolen from his mother has been jailed.

Martin Chubb's fraud was uncovered when his brother, their mother's other son, noticed irregularities in her finances and police launched their investigation.

Initially Chubb, of Newtown Road, Newbury, stole £43,790 between January 2020 and January this year and while some was paid back, it meant his mother failed to pay her care home fees.

Chubb, who had been appointed his mother's lasting power of attorney, admitted one count of fraud by abuse of position. He was jailed for two years and four months at Reading Crown Court.

Det Sgt Georgina Adey, from Thames Valley Police, said: "No mother should ever have to face the fact that their own child abused that power, spending money that should have gone to carers, on holidays, drugs, clothes and his wedding."

She added: "What is more hurtful is that Chubb would have likely inherited some of his mother's estate when she passed anyway.

"Chubb got greedy and the ease of which he could defraud his mother lured him in to take more and more."

Adey said she was "delighted" with the severity of Chubb's sentencing on 11 June, which she said was reflective of his crime.
