Park pays tribute to 'gentle' giraffe after death at 23
West Midlands Safari ParkA safari park has paid tribute to its oldest giraffe, who has died aged 23.
Strider was born at West Midlands Safari Park in Bewdley, Worcestershire, in 2002 and was known for his gentle nature, said park keepers.
A tribute posted on Facebook remembered him for his "laid-back personality, dopey expressions and unmistakable slobbery smile".
"Strider had a way of winning over everyone he met," the park said. "Whether you knew him as the towering giraffe on the Safari Drive or had the privilege of working alongside him, he left a lasting impression on countless guests, keepers and colleagues over the years."
The park said the decision was made to put Strider down after his quality of life had begun to decline recently, adding that his welfare was its "highest priority".
Members of the Ungulate team said Strider would never be forgotten.
"As a calm and reassuring presence within the herd, Strider played a special role in the lives of many calves born at the park," they said.
"He was a wonderful uncle, often offering companionship and comfort to younger giraffes as they grew, and helping to shape the close-knit herd we know today.
"Strider's loss is deeply felt by everyone who cared for him."
