Man jailed for throwing drugs into prison

A man who threw a package containing illegal drugs with a street value of more than £12,000 into a prison has been jailed.

Police received a report on 11 July last year from a prison guard at HMP Hull who saw a parcel falling over the wall after it had been thrown by 30-year-old Joshua Smith.

On Monday, Smith, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Hull Crown Court to three years and eight months in jail after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to two counts of throwing a prohibited article into a prison.

Det Con Heather Butler, from Humberside Police, said: "The package was analysed leading to the discovery of an estimated £12,000 of drugs, including Class A drugs, and a mobile phone."

She said CCTV footage from outside the prison showed a man making several unsuccessful attempts to throw a package over the prison wall and then finally a successful attempt shortly before the prison officer located it inside the prison.

"Smith made the decision to facilitate dangerous drugs entering the prison," she said.

"Thankfully on this occasion the package was found almost instantly and never reached its intended destination. However, these drugs could have had catastrophic consequences."
