People in Liverpool still call the store by its original name

Mention the shop name Home and Bargain outside of Liverpool and you will most likely find yourself corrected.

The official name may well be Home Bargains but in Liverpool, the city where it was founded, it will always be known as Home and Bargain.

Whether that is a result of habit or pride, Scousers are certainly not budging.

In tribute, and to mark the shop's 50th anniversary, the city centre shop front on Bold Street has been transformed back to feature the original Home and Bargain sign.

Home and Bargain was founded by Tom Morris in Old Swan in 1976 when he was aged just 21 and became known for selling discounted household essentials and toiletries.

Coming from a Liverpool retailing family that has run shops for three generations Morris followed the family tradition. He started with very limited resources and over the next 20 years expanded it across the city and was always known as Home and Bargain.

It was in 1995 after a new colour scheme and slightly tweaked name, that the store expanded nationally and became known as Home Bargains, but people in Liverpool never made the switch.

As new generations grew up calling the shop by a different name, it led to some people wondering why.

To prove its original name and as a way to thank its loyal Liverpool customers the company has transformed its Bold Street store to feature the nostalgic Home & Bargain sign.

Visitors will also be able to explore a selection of retro products from five decades of trading.

The company now has more than 500 stores nationwide and employs more than 22,000 staff, with plans to grow to 1,000 stores and to more than 40,000 staff.
