Firearms officers called to violent disorder that left one man in critical condition
BBCOne man has been left in a critical condition after violence broke out in a village in south Wales.
Firearms officers from Gwent Police were called to the incident that happened near Hospital Road and Mill Road in Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, on Thursday at about 19:15 BST.
Five men were arrested, and police said four of these men, aged 31, 40,45 and 61, are currently in police custody.
The fifth, aged 59, is in hospital and a 56-year-old remains in critical condition.
Officers have appealed for anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage from the area between 19:00 and 19:30 BST to contact them.
The National Police Air Service also attended the scene, alongside paramedics.
Det Ch Supt Anne-Marie Salwey said: "Violence in any form is completely unacceptable and anyone who is found to be involved in this disorder will be dealt with as we will not accept this behaviour in our communities.
"We recognise that reports of this nature will prompt concern from our residents, and it is likely that you will see officers in and around the area conducting enquiries as part of this investigation," she said.
The road between Mill Road and Hospital Road remains closed in both directions.
