A lifeboat volunteer's first call-out resulted in her rescuing three fishermen from rising waters.

They were stranded waist-deep in water, along with their fishing gear, at Throbshaw Point, near Heysham in Lancashire on Tuesday.

It was the first rescue by new volunteer Fiona, who had just completed a year's training, the RNLI said.

"This incident highlights the critical importance of tide awareness in Morecambe Bay, where water levels can vary significantly," it warned.

'Check tide times'

"We strongly advise everyone to check tide times before venturing out on to the sands or rock armours in this area.

"While this rescue was successfully and safely completed, it serves as a reminder of how the dedication and bravery of our volunteers saves lives."

Paul Turner, lifeboat operations manager, said: "A huge congratulations to Fiona for confidently stepping into her volunteer role - your effort and commitment are truly appreciated."
